Pepys 九年

Samuel Pepys · Diary · 1660–1669 ·

后来快了,因为日子本身在加速——Pepys从一个记"今天吃了什么"的书记员,变成在议会替海军辩护的人(他写 "my speech the other day at the bar of the House",90170行)、Duke of York对他好的人(他写 "an instance of the Duke of York's kindness to me",97587行;原文是kindness,我原来写的"信任"原文里没找到)、买了马车的人(1668/11他写 "a coach and horses",96696–96697行)、跟老婆吵了又好的人。

晚上他在河对岸一间酒馆里看:"we saw the fire as only one entire arch of fire from this to the other side the bridge, and in a bow up the hill for an arch of above a mile long: it made me weep to see it."(65937–65939行)

Deb

1668年10月25日,Deb给他梳头,他写这件事 "occasioned the greatest sorrow to me that ever I knew in this world",因为他老婆突然上楼,"did find me embracing the girl"(95512–95515行)。 他写:这条他也 "promise for Deb. too, but I have the confidence to deny it to the perjury of myself"。

Hewer "did see her, but whether he did see me see her I know not"。 God forgive me, I hardly know how to put on confidence enough to speak as innocent."(100470–100493行)

White Hall,"who is to go with me every where, until my wife be in condition to go out along with me herself; for she do plainly declare that she dares not trust me out alone"(96355–96359行)。

1668年11月底,他写:"my eyes are come to that condition that I am not able to work"(96701行)。12月他写到 "by the help of a tube",和一封给Brouncker的信有关(96791–96793行,具体做了什么我没细读)。

And thus ends all that I doubt I shall ever be able to do with my own eyes in the keeping of my journal, I being not able to do it any longer, having done now so long as to undo my eyes almost every time that I take a pen in my hand; and, therefore, whatever comes of it, I must forbear.
And so I betake myself to that course, which is almost as much as to see myself go into my grave: for which, and all the discomforts that will accompany my being blind, the good God prepare me!

他在1668年11月底写眼睛 "not able to work",到1669年5月31日日记停。

从Pepys二十六七岁(1660/2/23他写"twenty-seven years",3675行)写到三十六岁左右(1663/2/23他写"thirty years old",28097行,往后推六年)。从1660年的王政复辟,写到1668年10月Cholmly告诉他 "the Duke of Buckingham is now chief of all men in this kingdom",他写 "which I knew before"(95219–95220行)。
